I‘m German, born in the West in an area of former coal mining („Ruhrgebiet“) and living in the North now. As almost every person in the Ruhrgebiet area, I have a great grandfather who once came to find work there - mine from a now Czech town in the 1920s. But I guess I must have some Balkan genes, too, because it matches my vibe so much 😊. Also maybe fun fact, my mother is from a Protestant middle class family and my father has a Catholic working class/farmer background and my grandmothers never got over it and didn’t trust each other 🙈😂

My grandfather was Hungarian and he came to Switzerland by chance in 1956 when the Hungarians were trying to get rid of the occupation. He wanted to go originally to GB but the line of people in Austrian refugee center was much longer for GB and the line for Switzerland was short so he queued there and that why I was born here in Switzerland 🇨🇭 and not in the uk :)

just goes to show how a decision that might seem insignificant to oneself (so to speak, since he definitely wouldn't have had the same life) can change the entire life of one or more people!! no relation but I went to Switzerland a few years ago!! 🙌🏼

I just realized but actually asking that the way I just did makes me sound a bit like a psychopath 😅… I promise you there's nothing weird about it, it's just that I love learning things and it's culture (and a lot of curiosity…) anyway, I'll understand if you don't reply 😅🫶🏼

I‘m German (Bavarian), I‘ve never moved in my life. My dad is franconian (technically part of Bavaria but if you say that you‘ll be hated they don’t see themselves like that). My great grandmother came here during ich WWII from an an area that’s now the Czech Republic but used to be Germany. That’s all, though I have some family lore I’ll share about my one great grandpa and my grandma’s childhood Her mom died from childbirth and she lived with nanny’s until she was almost a teen even though my great grandpa remarried relatively fast, apparently she reminded him of his dead wife but his new one also didn’t want to raise someone else’s child. I even remember both, my great grandpa only a little, he was the typical man that survived a war, all gruff and „masculine“. He died around twelve years ago. My step great grandma grew very fussy with old age and visiting her was very boring for me. She died around five years ago. They used to have a „farm“ with lots of fruit trees and chickens (they could range free under the trees), which used to be so large it stretched between two relatively distant roads in town (I learned to bike there).

I hadn't had time to reply yet but this is really super interesting!! 🤩 THANK YOU FOR SHARING!! YOUR whole story is IMPORTANT, even the details about your grandparents because if it hadn't happened that way then you wouldn't have been born and you wouldn't be able to tell us about yourself so yes it's YOUR story so it's IMPORTANT!!

Only the first part is really important, the rest is just me rambling about my great grandparents
