It's number fluency. We teach these skills to young kids to help with basic fact fluency. Indicates a deeper understanding of math operations as opposed to simply memorizing basic facts. I've heard some people who were raised in the era of memorizing facts refer to it as 'new math' and a waste of time but it's not. It significantly impacts success with math in older grades.
It's an effective method. With young kids we teach doubles first. 4+4, 8+8 then go through doubles + or - 1 then doubles + or - 2. When you can see patterns in math it makes more sense also being taught to see numbers visually in different ways with objects such as base 10 blocks, number line, counters organized in different ways. All helps to build neural pathways in the brain that reinforce concepts so they stick.
Oh shit didnât know that was my adhd. I always knew I was a low functioning ADHDer not medicated but I never really knew that I was a low functioning ADHDer until I was out in the world all alone as an adult and holy hell, everything I am, do, love, hate, everything can be traced back to my adhd. Itâs fricking nuts
Definitely. Itâs how I got through math in K-12. And why my math homework took 2 hours a day to finish.
Yes! Itâs like I have certain reference points in my brain and thatâs the only way I can do maths things mentally
I mean, I have dyscalculia so I couldnât even tell you if thatâs correct or not đđ
Yes and I can do it quicker than people can do 7+7. It's our superpower. Haha
OMG... YES!!! But, when I try to explain to folks they think I'm crazy. đ It's how I know how old I am.
I love the name... I thought about making my name NotSerious ha. I love the similar humour/thought process!
Isn't this a pretty universal strategy, regardless of being neurodivergent or not?
Yesss we need a math masterclass for people with adhd my mind doesnât understand it the way itâs taught!
Oh, wow! Never thought about it being related to ADHD. I thought most people did that đ§
What, is that really an adhd thing? Iâve always done it that way but I didnât realize it was an adhd thing.
Thatâs my go-to math solution for sure! When tipping. âIf 10% of $70 is $7, half of that is $3.50, 7.00 + $3.50 ⊠15% tip is $10.50 đ€Ș
Omg this was an adhd thing too?? Everything starts to make sense now...đ«š
I could NEVER memorize times tables and still have to do mental math similar to this. Iâm 60% done with my PhD but cannot do complicated maths.
