Negative self talk

I've always been very hard on myself, critical, and just down right mean also I expect perfection in everything I do or I've failed. Obviously this is impossible to achieve and has made life pretty difficult to say the least! So one thing I do that has helped me allot is to make a conscious effort to talk to myself like I would a friend or someone else seeking advice or in the same situation, because I would never talk to my friend or anyone for that matter the way I do to myself! It helps to think what would I say to my friend and apply it to the conversation I'm having with myself. The other thing I reluctantly started and now I love doing to counter my self sabotage negativity is before/after a shower when the mirror is all fogged up, I take a qtip and write a positive affirmation on it and honestly I thought it was kind of stupid (I've been trying to correct my negative mindset for 36 years to no avail this idea of saying or reading positive affirmations seemed so dumb to me but I am willing to try anything to change my way of thinking) and I didn't think it would do much but I'm really surprised at how much it really is helping me, my go to affirmation is: you are exactly where you're supposed to be and you will be OK ♡ yourself (meaning from me and for me to love myself just the way I am) and honestly it's kind of feels like it makes my heart smile, goofy but true...... and I'm sorry for the book. I'm very long-winded, but hopefully, this helps someone who struggles with similar issues and I think this app is really cool so far, it's my first day so thank you for your time, and I hope you have a fantastic positive and productive day!!!

When I had constant negative thoughts, I recently realized I would go back and forth between pitying myself (and having resentment for those who wronged me) and beating myself up for things I've done or even getting myself into those situations where I was wrong. Self love lies in the middle, it's having compassion for yourself and what you've been through. Even if you made a mistake, of course you did that bc of x, because of the result of your experiences and upbringing etc. And now being self aware of it you can make better choices in the future. And that same compassion can be applied universally to others

Congrats on finding a method that helps you love yourself! I feel like it is one of the hardest things to do in this life, especially those of us who did not grow up in abundance of love and understanding
