I have found that specific songs can really help me regulate. For me, Enya really does the trick, but maybe you can try different songs and see if they resonate with your brain. Also, if you’re eating candy, have you tried really sour candy? I’ve heard that can help with regulating.

I've found practicing mindfulness through expanding my self awareness, actively engaging in rewiring my brain through neuroplasticity to build resilience, and lastly, discipline through traditional martial arts to be the winning combination for my particular shade of ADHD and Asperger's. I recommend "The Adventure of I" by Tania Kotsos comprehensive Mindfulness and expanding self awareness. And "Bouncing Back" by Linda Graham MFT for rewiring your brain for resilience. Hope it helps.

Skateboarding has always helped me a lot, since I was 13, if something made me angry I took a deep breath and thought, I'll take it out on a skateboarding session, if something scared me, I used the courage to learn tricks and face the reality of everyday life as a big nonsense easy to deal with, now I'm almost 30 years old and I have a torn knee ligament, I confess that I have a lot of accumulated anger, the frustration of not being able to skateboard makes me angry, but I have faith that I'll be able to go back to doing a light ride soon 🙌🏾

Depends on the situation: for example, if I’m angry, I need to do something physical such as walking my dogs, and if I’m really ANGRY? I even clean my house. Vacuuming is a form of instant gratification because I see immediate results. I’m a cluttered person but I’ve been really trying to retire that behavior. The cleaner my surroundings are, the calmer I am. If I’m depressed, I need distractions. I often resort to several TV series that no matter how many times I’ve watched, they always uplift me. My favs include Schitt’s Creek, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, and Animal Control. For self soothing, I love petting my cat, whose purring is a calming sensation. And of course, my dogs always surround me with love. Art or writing is my most effective form of regulating my emotions, but if I’m in a major depression, it’s hard to do anything.

I have recently rediscovered the app called Endel (“An app that is grounded in neuroscience principles, using sound to influence brain activity and promote desired states”) It recently got me out of a big emotion of total overwhelm and being totally stuck. Just by listening to a soundscape for overwhelm…4 minutes in I was feeling so much better. I could actually feel my brain calming down. When researching for an app, I was really surprised by all of the positive reviews, especially people noting they have ADHD and how much this app has helped them. I’m still on my seven day trial, but I am really liking this app a lot.

Something I started doing as a kid, that I still do today is going into the bathroom and turning the shower on. The sound of the water soothes me. I turn the water on pretty warm so the bathroom steams up and when I’m ready, I’ll go into the shower and sit down. The shower that are also a tub. I turn on the shower part & I’ll sit & cry or do breathing techniques. For whatever reason the warmth, plus sound of the shower, and the feeling of the water falling on me has always been soothing & helps ground me anytime I’m feeling an intense emotion.

I breathe…it sounds super typical but when I went to therapy this was a game changer for me. (look up the box method breathing) It doesn’t remove the block feeling but it helps relieve some stress/anxiety to think about my emotions more clearly when I feel stuck planning. I also plan for ‘paralysis time’ If I know I have to get work done that week. I make sure to be extra extra realistic with how much time I will need then once it think its realistic enough I add a more time to that ‘paralysis time’ as i tend to underestimate the time I do need to recover my energy mentally. This way I dont feel guilty for taking extra time to do nothing 😂

I love writing, but when my brain is overloaded it feels very frustrating. I just thought of some ideas that might take trial and error. I love journaling but using talk-to-text for the thoughts. I find different expressions and activities help me through the big feels. (changing to handwriting-type font, printing the page, decorating with scrapbook ideas, mood coloring, hole/disc punch insert into binder) Maybe these can help with creative outlet, while venting helps release the pressure of the bottle-neck thoughts and emotions.

Avatar de hellomarisa
hellomarisahace 11 meses

Same I lost mine in 2017. Don’t try anything too extreme. Just get out the house and try something new where you force yourself to meet people or to meet with yourself but not inside your house. Maybe a run club. Especially any sports helps with dopamine. Shoot maybe even golf. Or work. Rumination will hit but us at times and as adhders…we ruminate even harder!!so we need to distribute our attention outside our heads. And also if you feel like ‘what’s the point of anything’ let me tell ya…the point is to allow yourself balance. Why? You are alive your mom provided you an opportunity for a chance at life, go live it, go cry, go laugh, do nothing, do something. But with balance. Your mom probably raised you and put effort and love not only on you but other things as well small things, big things, her relationships with other people etc. How we act is a mirror and testament to our character it’s important to understand your values and why they matter to you…including treating others well. Why is this important? if we know our values we have more control over our thoughts…if we can redirect our thoughts then we can make better choices and choices determine the quality of our life experiences. Not all the time but most of the time. Be the hero of you story you have free will and that free will starts from something small as a thought and no one can ever take your thoughts away.

When I realize I‘m not ok - mostly overwhelmed - the best thing is to get my thoughts out and order them. Ideally, I do that on my own by writing it down, but that‘s not the easiest way when I‘m overwhelmed or stressed. So usually I try talking to someone about it or I create a voice memo (or several), just because talking it out helps.

Avatar de amfam3-AiVb

Oh no. This is making me realize that maybe I don’t balance my emotions. I think I react on my emotions, then deal with the fall out later. Oof. I need to learn when to journal my thoughts and feelings vs. rant about them. I need to channel my negative emotions into action, maybe physical action such as exercise. Definitely something to be aware of and to make a change moving forward.

Stay active physically 3-5 out of the 7 days. Yoga, running and Basketball. To be clear, I was diagnosed at 40. I’m 41, and still learning but I couldn’t do it or continue to do it without my whole team! My sons and wife have been extremely supportive and we’re figuring things out together.
