Your ADHD Story

What is your ADHD story? I was diagnosed with ADD as a little girl, about 5 years old. I had strong signs that there was something “off” about my learning and how quickly I was able to catch on to something. I always had troubles in school with catching on to something quick, until I got further in my teen years. I was put on my first ADD medication when I was 14. That was a game changer for me, until I had a strong case of depression and anxiety along with it. So I kept switching to medications that worked for me. ADD has always been a challenge but since I grew up dealing with challenges, a challenge never scared me, it just was something I was used to. So what’s your story? I’d love to read them all!

I was diagnosed in my early teens. I was always an odd kid but my parents didn't think much of it. It wasn't til I was skipping classes & self-harming, did they think to take me to a psychiatrist. There they diagnosed me but still didn't seem to know anything about ADHD. The doctor put me on ritalin(?). But it felt like I was a guinea pig with the constant blood tests, so I quit. ADHD was still new & unknown then so my parents told me I'd outgrown it. It wasn't until recent social media awareness of ADHD, have I realised that, not only do I still have it, but it's been majorly affecting my life. Especially recently, since I moved to Japan, the work life here has been causing me to have major ADHD flare ups, burnout and depression. Unfortunately I can't escape it cause the wages are so s*** here that I can't save enough to go back. I haven't been able to see my family since I moved here in 2018. 😭 I love Japan, but it is NOT ADHD friendly at all.

I suspected I had it, but I've never had any learning problems at school, college or post graduation, on the contrary. So my doctor didn't believe I might. I also had a baaad case of generalized anxiety and social anxiety. So after a rough period I started on anxiety meds for the first time when I was 28yo. After my son was born in 2022 my already fragile executive function (that I compensated before somehow) got way too dysfunctional. That plus my brother and sister being diagnosed with adhd made my doc start me on ritalin and it was a real game changer. Like seriously. Even my anxiety (that she thought was never getting really better) drastically reduced. So she confirmed the adhd diagnosis. I was 32.

Just diagnosed at 35! Always had anxiety 😥. Frequent burnout, low spoons 🥄. Now PMDD and ADHD. Always wanting to do more than I manage in all areas of life: academics, art, helping others, exercise, etc.

I was diagnosed with ADD when I was 27. And suddenly everything made sense. I have had quite a variety of diagnosis in my collection, and most probably all of their symptoms were just expressions of my spicy brain 🤗
