new year, same ADHD

i hate how other people can say that in the new year they will do so much when i’m sitting there thinking oh great my brain just won’t do that as easy like i envy how neurotypical people can just change routine so easily and introduce new things. but im trying to turn my mind positive this year it’s small but i think if my brain is diffrent then why can’t the world around me be and look at the world like that! i want to start helping myself rather then working against my brain happy holidays everyone ❄️❤️

Talk is cheap - New Year’s resolutions get broken by neurodivergents and neurotypicals alike. Unfortunately you hear their talking, but their failures are usually silent, so you think they’re really doing it all. I think one of the most important questions you need to ask yourself is "why do I think I want to do this?" If it’s a "should“ it’s gonna be extremely difficult. If you have a real WHY behind it, you have a much bigger chance of succeeding. Everytime you feel you’re getting off track, you can remind yourself WHY you want to do it.

This is a great comment. I think we with ADHD are great thinkers and come up with so many ideas. But lately I’ve been trying to reign in my desire to start new things because I always forget about everything else I have going on in my life and I hyperfocus on just that new shiny idea for a few days. I am trying to get better at asking myself “why”? And tell myself “that’s a great idea, write it down with all the other ideas that you want to do someday”. If there is something that I really want to do, I need to finish or eliminate something else before adding something else. Medication has helped me stop being so impulsive. It’s not foolproof but I’ve seen some improvement!
