ADHD is horrible to live with

People say it’s a strength or a gift but I can’t relate to that. It makes my life HELL to forget everything all the time, the constant grinding and inability to calm down, burning myself, breaking things, etc. People say it’s society the problem, not us. But I don’t agree, all these things I’m struggling with would be there with me even if I lived in the jungle.

Actually if it is a superpower it's not a problem and psychiatric diagnosis are per definition problems so then its actually not adhd that you have. Its as simple as that. Its the same stupid to call adhd a superpower as calling blindness a superpower. Its defined as a deficit or a handicap so...

That’s exactly what I mean when saying I can‘t hear that superpower stuff anymore. Of course it’s important for everyone‘s self acceptance or self love to identify personal strengths and focus on abilities and chances instead of seeking for challenges or disadvantages. And yes, I also like facets of my personality like the creativity, the thousands of good ideas or my learning speed because of hyperfocus and lack of fear. But that all has at least the same amount of drawbacks and the condition ADHD itself is clearly not a superpower for me - otherwise I wouldn’t need medication and ergo therapy plus frequent questioning of my mental health, tiring work on impulse control or asking myself why my whole family is such a mess.

I think sometimes it can be super great and sometimes it’s a literal nightmare to have my brain lol. Because I can remember the smallest little details but forget to literally eat a whole meal lol

Something in between, maybe? It's not the worst thing ever, since I learned to like myself a lot, but I wouldn't say it's a superpower either...it's just what it is, I guess. But having a diagnosis does make one wonder about themselves more, cause you are literally told about you "flaws", so we go on with our lifes way more attentive and reflecting about ourselves than someone whos just "normal". Which is too bad because some people could really use some insight 🙃

legit the symptoms are just what “inconveniences” we cause neurotypical people instead of what we actually experience it’s so ridiculous💀💀 like “frequently forgets things” as opposed to “brain/body disconnect when wanting to do a task”

Doesn't it make you a unique person with your quirks?! Yes, it's also exceptionally bad for me on some days. I learn every day how to deal with myself better. The more you laugh about yourself, the less these "bad" things happen. The better you deal with it, the less others are bothered by it. I look at other people in everyday life, and they also have very "silly quirks." The difference is that the others aren't even aware of them. So, can't we say that we possess a superpower, namely that of self-reflection? And through this superpower, we can laugh at ourselves and also change things that bother us extremely. Make a list of these things that bother you extremely about yourself and compare them with the quirks of others. So, I wouldn't want to trade places with anyone in my environment 😄 Really not! I've already been able to change some of my worst quirks. But we all know: We'll never be finished, because life changes every day. So I laugh about it again. If you know your strengths, just think about them. Because in 10 years, your strengths will be more important than your weaknesses, when you reminisce.

I think it’s both at the same time. I call it my double edged sword. It’s the other side of my gifts that’s made even worse by living in a neurotypical world. Finding tools that effectively help me manage is making a huge difference in my daily life. I’m a big fan of DBT at the moment although check back in 2 weeks to see if I’m still applying it after the shiny wears off 🤣
