Depression and adhd

Hello, guys. I've been diagnosed with hard depression recently. I'm not diagnosed with ADHD yet. I've got a prescription for a med called Asentra (sentraline) and I'm confused if I should buy it and take it. Maybe it would be better to start with seeing a psychiatrist who has experience with ADHD people? I'm really afraid to mess with my mind.

I hope you’re doing well. Most importantly if you feel like you’re going down a dark path, please see a professional asap and also talk to someone about it. That being said, have you tried switching to a very low carb diet? No sugar, no simple carbs and no highly processed foods. These foods mess with our brain chemistry and function and will multiply the impact of a mental problem. Eating a healthy low carb diet will reduce this impact significantly.

Thank you all for commenting and comforting me. I can't believe one month has passed already... I haven't been to a psychiatrist and I haven't bought the prescribed meds. I felt better and better every day and rapidly a few days ago I hit the skids...

Both? To be able to diagnose an adult may take a long time, so take the meds to stabilize your depression and go to see a psychiatrist that has experience with ADHD. I went to see a psychiatrist I was able to afford and was referred to a neuropsychologist for evaluation, I am taking sertraline for now... Life is still chaotic but at least the med is helping with the pms humour disruption

I'm on sertraline and I started way before adhd diagnosis and meds. Actually, sertralin is what made me better from depression and anxiety and stable enough for my doctor analyze and see that it wasn't only a mood disorder, but an adhd comorbidity. Still, when both are there u have to treat both. I use both meds still and one don't function so well without the other.

I've been on antidepressants for more than a decade before my ADHD was diagnosed. They will not solve the problem but they WILL help, if it is the right medication for you. I'd recommend to take the prescribed medication and test for yourself how well you respond to it. For me, antidepressants have been a lifesaver, but getting the right one for your needs and the right dosage is key. Most of all: don't be afraid. There is no need to. Trust your doctor and also your instincts, and clearly communicate should you feel effects you deem to be negative, then work together to find a fitting replacement. There are a great many different SSRIs, at least one of them will be the right choice for you. It can carry you through the hard times, until the fitting ADHD medication can be determined for you. I was diagnosed - by sheer chance - in May this year. Working together with my doctors, we found Elvanse 60mg for me. And since then my antidepressants could be tapered off completely. Which I'm very happy about - but also aware and grateful. Without the SSRI medication, there is a high chance I wouldn't have lived to have seen the real cause for my depression diagnosed.

I personally don't take SSRI meds, still they 're recommended sometimes. My thought here is: Depression is a comorbidity of ADHD/ADD; depression is mostly an imbalance of your serotonin level; getting rarely things done is a symptom of ADHD - causing low serotonin levels; getting things done and not be happy about it, is a symptom of ADHD cause your brain auto stimulates itself with creatively produced negative thoughts and steps into unwilling hyper focus sometimes;

Do you only take the medicine or do you see a psychologist regularly as well? I would recommend to discuss your concerns with the doctor that gave you the prescription. If you are in some way suicidal, do what you were told please. Meds can be adjusted later

Hey 👋🏼 I got diagnosed with depression long before I got diagnosed with ADHD. I'm also taking some antidepressants to treat my depression. I have a feeling they also help with some of the ADHD symptoms. I would take the Sertralin asap if you feel really bad, since they need a few weeks to really work. I know a lot of people who take antidepressants and ADHD medication. And my brain doesn't feel messed up, on the contrary I feel better/"normal" with them.

Antidepressants have improved my quality of life without which I probably wouldn’t have been able to attend sessions.. it’s completely up to you.. but listen to your gut and trust your instincts 😊🙏🏼

You should definitely see a psychiatrist! They can diagnose you and sometimes you can find one that may also provides some talk therapy, but a psychiatrist is primarily responsible for diagnoses and helping you find the right combination with you over time. That being said, you were diagnosed with depression as well by a doctor for a reason. If you are struggling at capacity and/or having thoughts of suicide, sertraline is an anti-depressant and an option. If you receive an ADHD diagnoses they will be able to add ADHD medication if the sertraline is helping.

Yes when I have it. But I use apps with daily affirmations and it helps or I do more exercise and understand better my adhd issues and I tend to feel better. I also have treated most traumas in therapy.

I use sertraline (Zoloft) for anxiety-depressive disorder, and also I have been diagnosed with ADHD. With my psychiatrist, we decided to take care of depression at first and then treat ADHD. Since then, I have tried a few ADHD meds like Strattera and Concerta, but I wouldn't say I liked their effects on me. So, I still have ADHD symptoms. But because of sertraline, I feel pretty good, out of the depressive thoughts, so I am going to lower the dose to 0 with time. But do you feel bad because of your depression?
