Question for the humans here who wear bras (and have the sensory ick)

My fellow bra-wearers, what brothers you more: with an underwire or without? I feel like most people are bothered by an underwire more, based on complaints I've heard over the years. However, I've realized I prefer an underwire. They seem to stay in place and don't go up under my girls. When there is no underwire, no matter the brand, the fabric rides up and gets sucked up under my girls and it's literally all I can feel and it bothers me so much I just want to take it off. šŸ˜£šŸ˜– I'm starting to think my sports bras even need to have an underwire or need to be the super compressive kind haha! Any other neurodivergent bra-adorners share my same sensory issue with bras? šŸ˜‚

Same! I literally got a breast reduction to reduce the amount that I’d have to wear them. They are my greatest ick and even thinking about it makes me uneasy

No wire! I'm like you, it moves too much plus mushes the girls down too much

My clothing works can be super annoying, but I love Aerie bras & undies. I am an underwire girl when I leave the house, but I just tried my first without from there and I really like it! Their materials are super comfy, this one gives me a little lift, and does not get stuck anywhere it shouldn’t. (38D if we decide size has something to do with it)

Underwire def bothers when it’s messed up and doesn’t sit flat anymore but I like the support of them

I wonder if it has to do with size at all? I’m 34B and do not own any w/ an underwire… maybe larger gets the support better with it?

Try Ruby Ribbon. Expensive but worth it. No wire but now bunch. Work with a consultant and get properly measured. The best fit will give you the most comfort for you and the girls! Yes it is MLM. No I do not sell it. It’s just really good!!!

It depends on the bra. I seem to like -a wide bottom or underwire. -Nothing tight -soft cup (I have one that I place cotton rounds in for this very reason)

I have to wear a wire. Otherwise I’m all uniboob. The only issue is the back hooks causing sensory issues.

yup! I usually prefer underwi4e or sports bra.... But it varies bra to bra and I can't determine if it's a good bra or bad bra until I've worn it a few hours. Gahhh!

I think I would like no underwire better, but I have this issue too! The band ends up folded up under the girls and it’s so uncomfortable 😣

I stopped wearing bras regularly during Covid (it made underwear obsolete outside of decorative purposes lol) but I think underwires are only good when you want a lift. Both wireless and underwire are equally uncomfortable to me.

Yes I’m the exact same way. Even throughout periods of weight gain where my cha-chas are bigger, whether I’m a small a-cup or big d-cup underwire is a must and I cannot do sports bras. It is to the extreme of only having one bra I like to wear, I should probably just buy multiple of the same kind šŸ¤”

Ever since they first appeared, they’ve each had a mind of their own. Like two jellyfish after their first coffee. So underwire — I feel so much more secure keeping these girls reined in!

Honestly it doesn’t even matter what kind of bra it is, I hate wearing bras. I am big breasted, so I have to wear bras on public, and I hate underwire.

Underwire on an unlined bra has been a game changer. Stays in place but doesn’t get that weird inner cup twisting that padding can sometimes do. Sports bras are okay for like an hour but they’re very smooshy and create underboob sweat if you’re heavier chested (can’t speak on if the same things happen with smaller chest)

I went bra-less for 5 years and absolutely loved it.. BUT the attention made me second guess myself.. I now wear bralettes with no wire, I still feel free and don’t have to worry about the eyes anymore.. if I’m going out of the town though, you bet your booty I’m wearing an underwire 😜 Chin up Tits out!

After Covid, since I was always home I stopped wearing bras and then when I needed to I couldn’t handle the underwire anymore! I’m a DD so underwires were a must. After lots of trial and error I found some that give lots of support and I don’t need a wire!

I use sports bras with different levels of support. High impact support for actually working out and low support for everyday

I am heave chested and I don’t like the girls touching. Not touching each other (sports bra) and not touching the skin below (non wire). I have lots of issues with heat rash under during the humid summers that the dr has been documenting. Hopefully documenting will help insurance pay for a reduction.

For me I like sports bras better because i cannot feel them, if that makes any sense? It feels like another shirt under my shirt. But i am that way with earrings and rings. I hate the way that they feel and just need them off to relax.

I hate underwire because when they break, the wire comes out & pokes me in my underarms. Then by the end of the day, I have a sore in the underarm area :(

Interesting topic. My daughter opts not to wear underwear or to even wear a bra saying I have nothing so whatever. I on the other hand will ALWAYS feel the need for one, morning, noon, and night. I HATE them! Sensory speaking they’re ALL the worst. Because of my hoshimotos I produce too much histamine, so I have skingraphia or whatever it’s called. Meaning when something cuts in, and leaves a mark, it really leaves a mark. I scratch, it shows! So bras become super itchy for me at times. The straps can dig in, but if I go and loosen them, I have no shoulders, they slide off. Joy! The underwires are what can itch, but I NEED that feeling of lift and separation. I hate monoboob. I’ve tried without underwire, but it’s not the same. And they ride or sage. And never define where you want. When I sleep lately the straps have been digging in. Those are the sleeping kind. So basically, just a shelf bra. But, I try to leave it to the side of my shoulders. I got the stomach flu a month ago, and I was ripping off everything in writhing pain. The bra, first to go! And it was honestly the most liberated I’d felt in YEARS!!!! Today I’m feeling hunched. I’ve tried so many different kinds of bras to get the right kind of support for my back AND front. But I’m beginning to think they don’t exist. And IF they do, then they’re hundreds of dollars. And who wants to spend that on a bra you have to replace six months to a year later!? I swear having sensory issues where I feel the individual garments on my body freaking sucks! And I think I ALWAYS knew it, but it’s wasn’t until having my boys and learning about their sensory needs, and ASD that the glass shattered and I learned about me. And it was like, wait… this way that I’ve been struggling with MY WHOLE LIFE. There’s a reason for this? There’s… a name?! I’m NOT A FREAK!!!??? So I deal with crappy bras that bother me in this way or that. I struggle with almost every clothing item. I take my boys to school. And I’ll spend almost an hour after trying to find ANOTHER outfit I can wear just because I’m FEELING all the different clothes in different ways and it’s causing such discord in my brain. I had to settle today on one that’s not working harmoniously. But NONE of them were. I’ve gained weight, so the clothes are tight. So it just feels like I’m feeling them all uncomfortably in the waist, or the hips, or the inseam, or all! Or the length, that’s fun! Tripping! Or they’re too short in a weird way. Skimming at your ankles in such a way that it itches them! You can’t wear socks, that looks weird. So you’re just stuck, sockless, cold feet, and itchy ankles. Yay neurodivergence!!!!

I have sensory issues but I love underwire. Haven’t worn anything else! My sports bras used to all have underwire, too, but I’ve found some w/out that do the job (I just always buy high impact - gives the support I want)

Funny I should see this question today as i am currently in a bit of a decluttering phase and decided today was bra day and tried on all my bras and now have more to donate than I have left in my drawer. I definitely prefer the underwire: after walking around for 20 mins this evening with a bra with no underwire, all of those ended up in the donate pile, it was definitely a weird sensory thing. Maybe because I’m well endowed but they all felt awful, the sports bras included, I just didn’t feel supported at all

Idk it depends on the mood or something like that because my sensory issues regarding bras are not consistent somehow!

Yes!!! I cannot stand the feel of bras in general, so I often don't wear one (unless I have to). I used to wear underwire.. the Wonderbra is not bad, but other ones actually ride up on me. I found a bra, like a sports bra that is all silky material without wires, etc. It is much more comfortable...found it at big lots of all places. But yes, I feel your pain. Tags, certain fabrics, bras... can be maddening and almost painful. Good luck and look at big lots, no joke..really comfy.

I’m part of the itty bitty titty committee so can’t say I totally understand but try adjusting your shoulder straps. Even I get mine too tight, it pulls up on the bottom of bra and tends to let the girls fall out the bottom. What about a tighter band around ribs? Just couple ideas…. Have you tried the bras that are tank tops? They really support entire torso and really smoothing and might keep them in place

I absolutely hate wearing bras and only do so when I’m out in public. I’m rather well-endowed so not wearing a bra while around others is not an option for me. I’ve gone wireless and seamless in the last six months. I do need to adjust the band since it constantly rolls up, but not having poky wires, snaps, zippers, or buttons makes up for it. Since I have chronic pain, the stretchy, seamless fabric doesn’t irritate my nerves as much and I don’t have to contort myself to get stupid things on anymore!

The wire doesn’t seem to make a difference to me, it all just depends on the individual bra. The best way I can describe my discomfort is itchy? Too constricting or it moves independently from my body. I hope this is allowed, I promise I don’t work for anyone, but I found a really comfortable bra, that I feel like has a good shape under clothes too. DKNY Women’s Seamless Bra. It’s is almost like a sports-bra/regular-bra hybrid. Inexpensive and super soft. I have been buying more expensive bras because I’m usually sensitive to cheaper fabric and stiffness. If you have a Costco where you live, they have the best price but I’ve seen them on Amazon too. Good luck team!!

But they ALL irritate me to no end. I prefer compressive undershirts/sport bras or shape wear to a regular bra as much as possible. I’ve even begun exploring corsets as more comfortable alternative.

Honestly underwire bothers me more because they inevitably work their way out and stab me.
